Mother Box: A device/character that was created by Jack Kirby and published by DC Comics. The Mother Box first appeared in Forever People #1.

The Mother Box is device that could best be described as a sentient computer. The devices are always referred to with the female pronoun, never neutral or male pronouns, and are treated as being intelligent. They were created by the New God Himon of New Genesis, who successfully, linked the Mother Boxes to the Source, the benevolent cosmic power that controls the universe.

The Mother Box can only be used by those of good moral character. This is possibly the explanation that the inhabitants of Apokolips, used-car salesmen, lawyers, and Martha Stewart are unable to use these devices. The Mother Box can be injured and die, just like other living beings. The person who holds and uses the Mother Box can heal it by thinking loving and nuturing thoughts toward it.

The Mother Box can perform a plethora of functions. It can create magnetic fields, force fields, and webs for capturing opponents. It can allow the holder to pass through solid objects. It can rearrange matter, which it does for the New God Orion, transforming his fearsome appearance to a more handsome one. Orion's Mother Box also helped him control his violent nature. It can teleport the holder, or in the case of the Forever People, be used to summon Infinity Man. It is used by Mister Miracle to aid in his death-defying escapes.

It is rumored that Himon originally created a sentient device called the Father Box. However, he had to abandon this project because he used a Microsoft product as the operating system, so the angry and frustrated thoughts of the New Gods who used the Father Box caused the device to keep dropping dead.

CONTACTS

CONTACTS:

Darkseid: Evil megalomaniacal supervillain, created by Jack Kirby and owned by DC Comics. Darkseid is a very big guy with gray, rock-like skin. He is one of the cosmically-powerful New Gods, and he rules the hellish planet of Apokolyps.

Darkseid is tough enough to bitchslap Superman around, and he also possesses the "Omega Effect", beams of energy he can project from his eyes which can either destroy something, transport it across space and time, or even resurrect the dead. He also has access to things like Boom Tube generators (hand-held teleporters), Parademons (mindless cannon fodder to throw at superheroes), and evil minions with funny names like DeSaad, Granny Goodness, Kalibak, and many others.

Darkseid is obsessed with discovering the Anti-Life Equation, which will allow him to dominate all sentient life. Let's hope he doesn't succeed...

DeSaad:

Female Furies: group of villains published by DC Comics. The Female Furies were created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in Mister Miracle #6.

The Female Furies are an elite band of fighters culled from the toughest and most ruthless warriors in Granny Goodness's orphanages. The all-female attack squad is used by both Granny Goodness and the ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid.

Originally, the group was led Big Barda, but she fell in love with Scott Free, the son of Inzya, the Highfather of New Genesis. She followed him to Earth, and the Female Furies were sent to retrieve Big Barda. After clashing with their former leader, the members of the group agreed to aid Barda and returned with her and Free, who had adopted the identity of Mister Miracle, to Apokolips to fight for their freedom. The Female Furies eventually returned to the service of Darkseid.

In more recent years, the Female Furies have clashed with the group of villains-turned-government-agents known as the Suicide Squad in an attempt to retrieve Glorious Godfrey after his failed attempt to rid the Earth of all heroes. They have also clashed with the Justice League, Supergirl, and Mister Miracle.

The members of the Female Furies apart from Big Barda include:

Bernadeth: Sister of Darkseid's right hand man, Desaad. Bernadeth leads the Female Furies after the departure of Big Barda. She shares her brother's love of evil and pain and is a skilled leader though she often clashes with fellow member Lashina. Bernadeth's perferred weapon is the fahren knife, that causes those stabbed with it to self-immolate from the inside out.

Lashina: A powerhouse whose preferred weapons are the lashes that adorn her costume. Lashina's lashes have a variety of effects.

Lashina is ambitions and desires the position of leader of the Female Furies currently held by Bernadeth. When the Female Furies came to free the Glorious Godfrey from the hands of the Suicide Squad, Bernadeth attempted to kill Lashina. Lashina was knocked into the swamp surrounding the Suicide Squad's headquarters. She later returned to help the Squad calling herself Duchess and armed with a high-powered, high caliber weapon of her own design. She stayed with the Squad feigning amnesia, until she deemed the time was right. She then kidnapped members of the Squad and returned to Apokolips to gain her revenge on Bernadeth. Lashina killed Bernadeth, but Bernadeth was resurrected by Darkseid. He then killed Lashina to punish her for overstepping her bounds. He has since resurrected her.

Mad Harriet: A psychopathic warrior, Mad Harriet spends a good deal of her time inflicting pain on her victims and cackling. Mad Harriet is armed with energy spikes that cover her fists, allowing her to punch through nearly any substance or energy field.

Stompa: Suited up with heavy metal gunboots, Stompa's main attack is a kicking attack that is capable of leveling buildings. Not the brightest member of the Female Furies, Stompa is rather direct in her attacks, but effective none the less.

Artemis: The most recent member of the Female Furies, Artemis uses a bow armed with high energy arrows. She also employs a pack of cybernetically enhanced hounds, to hunt and attack her prey

ENEMIES:

Big Barda (Barda Free): A hero published by DC Comics. Big Barda was created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in Mister Miracle #1 in 1971.

Big Barda was taken as a young child from her mother Big Breeda and raised in one of Granny Goodness's orphanages. Barda grew stronger than most of the other "orphans' in Granny's care, and so was taken and trained for battle. Eventually, Barda became part of a group of hand-picked warriors answerable only to Granny Goodness and the ruler of Apokolips himself, Darkseid. The group was called the Female Furies and soon after joining Big Barda was given leadership of the group.

Big Barda possesses incredible strength and invulnerability. She is an excellent tactician and a ruthless opponent. Barda is clothed in an armored costume that adds an additional layer of protection for her. Barda's weaopon of choice is the mega rod, which possesses the ability to fire powerful force blasts, negate or increase gravity for a chosen target, and open transdimensional pathways known as boom tubes that allow instant access across space and dimensions.

Big Barda led the Female Furies for a time until she met and befriended Scott Free, the son of the leader of New Genesis. With the help of the New God Metron and Big Barda, Scott Free escaped to Earth and took up the identity of Mister Miracle. Big Barda followed soon after to be with Free and was pursued by her teammates in the Female Furies. The Furies fought their former leader for a time, but soon were convinced to help Big Barda and Mister Miracle return to Apokolips to win their freedom. The Female Furies eventually returned to work for Darkseid.

Big Barda and Mister Miracle were married and eventually grew tired of the super-hero business and tried to settle down in a small town. They were continually drawn back into the world of costumed heroes and eventually returned to New Genesis to live with Scott's father, the Highfather Inzya.

Big Barda returned to Earth for a time in the company of the son of Darkseid, the violent hero Orion. The two were sent to help defend Earth against Darkseid's plots and joined forces with the Earth's premiere super hero team, the Justice League.

Mr. Miracle (Scott Free): Scott Free was the chosen legal name of the DC Comics character who went by the costumed name Mr. Miracle. His specialty was being an escape artist of universal caliber, rather like Harry Houdini crossed with James Bond (so that he'd have adventures worth writing about in kids' comic books).

You've probably have never heard of him, unless you're a fan of The Sandman and saw his cameo in the fifth issue of "Preludes and Nocturnes" or spotted him in the third issue of the company-wide Kingdom Come crossover series.

A super-hero created by Jack Kirby and published by DC Comics.

Three men have worked under the name of Mister Miracle. The first was Thaddeus Brown, a human escape artist. Working in the circus with his friend Oberon, Brown was an accomplished escape artist and during his time in the circus, he met Scott Free. Soon after their meeting, Brown was killed by the villain Steel Hand, Free adopted Brown's former identity as Mister Miracle and avenged his friend's death. Free then took over Brown's stage act.

Scott Free is the son of Izaya, the Highfather of the planet New Genesis. New Genesis and another planet Apokolips were at war and the leaders of the two worlds exchanged sons in an effort to bring peace in the conflict. Hence, Scott Free was raised on Apokolips under the care of Granny Goodness, at the command of the planet's leader Darkseid. Granny Goodness sought to mold Free in the image of Darkseid, but Free's spirit would not be broken. During this time, Free and the head of Darkseid's Female Furies, Big Barda fell in love. Eventually, Free, with the help of others, escaped Apokolips and traveled to Earth. There he met Thaddeus Brown and adopted the identity of Mister Miracle.

Free and Barda were married and tried to settle into a "normal" life, but the forces of Darkseid constantly harrassed the young couple. Eventually, Free joined the hero group, the Justice League of America. Free was a member of the group for a number of years, eventually deciding that the time was right to retire as Mister Miracle. Free began to search for someone to replace him in the role and a young human named Shilo Norman was chosen for the role. Equipping him with the gadgets Free had used for years, Norman began to work as the new Mister Miracle. Shortly after that, Free and Barda moved to New Genesis to begin a life on Free's native planet.

HISTORY

Granny Goodness did not begin as one of the higher-level residents of Apokolips, but was instead one of the "Lowlies" - the brutally-oppressed peasant class. She was removed from her parents and trained to be one of Darkseid's "Hounds" (his elite soldiers). One part of their training was to train their dog; Goodness named hers Mercy. Through combat and training, the two bonded. As the final step of her initiation into life as a Hound, she was told to kill her beloved pet. Instead, she killed her trainer for ordering this. When Darkseid asked why, she answered that "to have done otherwise would have robbed my lord of a most valuable asset," telling him that Mercy would obey her first, but him foremost. Testing this, Darkseid ordered Mercy to kill Goodness. Mercy attacked Goodness, forcing Goodness to kill her pet. Darkseid was impressed, telling Goodness that she had graduated with honors. "You have trained Mercy so well in my name that perhaps you'll do as well training others whose blind obedience I will one day require."

Darkseid had Granny run the training facility for his elite soldiers, where she uses brainwashing and torture, in a brutal parody of child care, to turn the innocent into fanatical warriors willing to kill or die for Darkseid's glory. Since the war between Apokolips and New Genesis first moved to Earth, Granny Goodness has often run Earthly orphanages, looking for potential warriors for Darkseid.

Granny runs the "orphanage" on Apokolips and is the chief of the Female Furies. She also raised Scott Free, the son of Highfather of New Genesis who had been traded for Darkseid's son as part of a peace treaty. Scott Free (AKA Mister Miracle) became the first child to successfully escape one of her Orphanages.

More recently, after Darkseid's victory over New Genesis destroyed both planets, Granny reinvented herself. She is now a brothel madame, with the Furies as her prostitutes. In this guise she hoped to seduce the new Mister Miracle to Darkseid. It is not known if this is canon.

In the final issue of the Amazons Attack miniseries it was revealed that Granny Goodness has been posing as Athena, having been manipulating the Amazons into the war. It also appears that Goodness is posing as Athena in the Countdown series, using Amazon centers to recruit new female fighters. She is also holding the Gods of Olympus prisoner.

----

Granny Goodness is the headmistress of Darkseid's orphanage, where she molds the orphans of Armagetto into mindless soldiers of Apokalips' armies. She considers the orphans her children, putting them through what she calls "tough love," which is nothing more than physical and mental torture.

Among Granny's greatest successes are the Female Furies, who represent her best students. Although they've failed Grannty in the past, she, as well as Darkseid, considers them to be valuable tools due to their total obedience to her.

Her two greatest failures come in the form of Scott Free/Mr. Miracle, one of her prize pupils-to-be, and Big Barda, the ex-leader of the Furies. Scott rebelled against her and the system until he managed to escape Apokolips, while Barda, who fell in love with Scott, left her service to Granny and went with him. Granny has considered these two to be personal problems, and has tried to punish them for years, but has never been able to get it done.

She was once, *once* corrupted by Scott Free, who almost made Granny see the error in her ways. But Darkseid intervened to stop this. Since then, Granny has been kept very busy with her orphanage, under Darkseid's very careful watch, in the extreme case that Scott Free's plan may have worked. Over time, she has continued to ber her normal old self.

Weapon of choice: Granny often uses a Mega-rod to keep her unruly children under control.

---

The origins of the woman known as Granny Goodness are lost in the past. She now serves the ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid. She is in charge of running a series of "orphanages", institutions where the soldiers that serve Darkseid are trained in slavish obedience. The largest of these orphanages is called the Happiness Home and serves as Granny Goodness's homebase.

Those who live in Granny's care are treated to pain and torture. Only the strongest survives, learning to obey no matter the price. It was into one of these orphanages that the son of Inzya, the leader of New Genesis also called Highfather was sent after he was exchanged for Darkseid's son, Orion in a brokered peace settlement. Inzya's son survived for years before finally escaping to Earth with the help of the New God Metron. The boy, who adopted the name Scott Free, gained the emnity of Granny Goodness for his escape and the two have been implacable foes for many years. Scott Free later adopted the identity of the hero Mister Miracle and married one of Granny Goodness' prize pupils, Barda.

The most elite of Granny Goodness warrior women become members of a group called the Female Furies. Barda is the former leader of the Female Furies. This group of savage warriors is often sent by Granny Goodness on missions.
