HISTORYPamela and Theodore both work for Steel Labs - an unknown portion of Steel Industries which is minor chip manufacturing plant in Silicon Valley. Steel Labs is devoted almost completely towards the understanding, and hopeful recreation, of the powers of the beings known as Supers that roamed the planet (and cosmos). This very endeavor is how the boy known as Powerboy came into being. Both of Adam's parents had been at Steel Labs for some time, and had been married for several years. Steel Labs has been mostly unsuccessful in their efforts of replicating those with powers, although they had been mildly successful in some respects, and had a respectable library of stolen and 'found' DNA. Adam's own father had undergone gene therapy treatments as a trial of a serum he had developed to create stronger, better soldiers. They were only mildly successful, however, and the subjects then required regular injections of particular hormones that were expensive to produce, so it never went further. Eventually, however, the Labs came into DNA that they had been trying to hard to find for so long. Superman had had an epic battle, and after combing the ruins they had found several rocks with saliva samples, and even a few stray skin cells. It was time to put all their eggs in one basket, so to speak. An embryo was prepared. Originally from Adam's mother, modified with the DNA of Superman. Unbeknown to his parents, other DNA also contaminated the sample - that of the villain known as Raven. His father's sperm was then used to fertilize this embryo and it was implanted inside of his mother. The pregnancy was practically perfect - in fact the growing child was perfectly healthy in absolutely every way. The birth also went well, with no complications, and Adam being born a healthy baby boy. Adam was closely monitored for the first two years of his life, and his powers slowly started to become active. His parents were ecstatic as his powers began to show, knowing they were successful, and they redoubled their efforts on obtaining more DNA samples and recreating it. They were able to recreate it - in part - in a few test subjects, although they had no more of Superman's DNA. They made strong efforts to comb through the sites of his fights for his DNA, but were unsuccessful. Still, with such a shining example as their son to drive them, their efforts would probably have succeeded. That is, if they hadn't made so many small enemies. While Adam was still a toddler, most of Steel Lab was destroyed in an attack by a rival company that was tipped off by someone's DNA they had stolen. During this attack, Powerboy's father was killed, although Powerboy was able to save his mother by running to safety with her in tow. Adam's mother was resilient, however, and Steel Enterprises still had amazing financial backing. They rebuilt, almost as good as new. But without Adam's father, they had lost their most brilliant mind, and were now decades behind where they were previously. Years passed and Adam continued to grow up. He spent all of his days in the Labs surrounded by his mother, special tutors, and lab technicians studying him. He was given plenty of access to almost anything he wanted, including computers, video games, books and television, but was never allowed to leave. Obedience was also trained into him at a young age, so he never truly questioned why he was never allowed to leave. His mother was upfront with him that it was for his safety, and the safety of others that he might accidentally hurt. Steel Labs continued to rebuild, but their experiments never quite reached the height of where they were with his father's mind in the office. Still, his mother refused to give up, and while they didn't make any great strides, the company continued to expand its operations, building up a rather nice library of Supers' DNA, but not being successful in replicating any more powers without side effects that often killed the recipient. As Adam aged into his teens and became ever more curious, his mother started to involve him in the 'family business'. He was heavily trained as their agents, akin to basic military officer training in reconnaissance, organization and fighting. It wasn't long before she was willing to send him out on DNA gathering missions (with other agents in tow, of course). After all, he was a loyal son, and what harm could come to him? His powers were off the charting capabilities of their small company, and bullets didn't phase him. She thought that as he grew up, with his powers, he could helm Steel Labs one day, taking it to amazing heights once his powers fully matured. But as Adam grew into his late teens, he started to question the motives of those around him. His emotion reading abilities surfaced, and it became obvious to him that not all of those that surrounded him had his best interests at heart. He kept his feelings to himself, however, but thanks to his powers it became nearly impossible to ignore. Even under his own mother's outpouring of love there were the undercurrents of greed, envy and even resentment that his father wasn't still alive. Finally, Powerboy couldn't take it any longer. The next time his mother sent him out for a collection assignment, he went out with the agents, and once they were far away from the labs he simply left them standing there as he sped off, not sure of where he was going. With a request from Wonder Boy, Power Boy and his newfound 'friend' midKnight joined the Titans, although only for their first mission. Away from the lab, his body quickly began to deteriorate for an unknown reason. Starting with migraines, then seizures, Adam slowly began to go insane. He ran away from midKnight only to be found by the Amazon Aresia, who gained powers almost identical to Wonder Boy. She manipulated him like a dog leading him to fight Wonder Boy. He went berserk after seeing midKnight with Leo. Together, the two beat the warrior to near death. Aresia pulled him back waiting for the perfect moment to strike. |
