HISTORYDiana's story actually began 30,000 years ago.... A caveman killed his pregnant mate. The woman's spirit, and that of her unborn child, were taken into the Well of Souls. The great goddess Gaea herself placing them there. They were the first, but they would unfortunately be far from the last. The souls placed there all had two things in common. They were all women and they had all been unjustly killed by the hands of a man, their lives cut short by the violence that only too often plagues the world. Several thousand years later, B.C., the Olympian goddesses created the Amazon race from this well of souls. Thousands of women who were reincarnated as warriors to bring peace to Patriarch's World and renew faith in their gods. Leadership of the tribe of warrior-women was given to two sisters who were the first to rise from their birth in the seas: Hippolyta and Antiope. But there was one soul left behind. A soul with a destiny different than the others. Unlike the other women who had been returned to the earth, this was the soul of a unborn child who had died in her mother's womb when the woman was killed. And so it was that the gods decreed this one would wait for the right time and place before coming into the world. From the beginning, one god had been more vocal than all the rest against the creation of this race. Ares. He had his own thoughts and plans on how to demand the proper tribute from those who inhabited the world. He would inspire fear and war. A warped plan to promote not only his own ideals but to bring himself into greater power within the Pantheon. And to this end? He enlisted an easily manipulated, chauvanistic, ego-maniac named Heracles. A demi-god and son of Zeus. Heracles brought his army to the Greek city-state of Themyscira, legendary home of the Amazons. It is here they had isolated themselves as man was less than willing to be led to the true path of peace and even hunted the Amazons down in order to be rid of them. Heracles himself called out Hippolyta and demanded her surrender. The queen refused and instead the two fought. In the end, she bested him. He laughed it off and called for a truce, declaring the Amazons worthy. The men were welcomed in Themyscira and much merriment was had as the men and women came closer together and got to know one another. Hippolyta felt she'd grown quite close to Heracles, but too soon it became all too apparent it was a rouse. The warrior-queen had been tricked and welcomed the enemy within the safe-haven of their walls, and in the end she paid the price. Hippolyta was drugged and knocked unconscious by Heracles, and all over Themyscira, the Amazons were falling one by one and were imprisoned. Nearly every sort of atrocity that could have been visited upon the Amazons by the men was was done tenfold, with the demi-god taking special pleasure in humiliating the warrior-queen. When he left, Themyscira ransacked and pillaged, Hippolyta lay on the floor of her cell, shackled, and prayed to her goddesses. She was visited by Athena who freed her, imparting to her wisdom. Freed, Hippolyta also released her sisters. They fought for their freedom and won, though Heracles and many of his other men had already gone, escaping. It was then Hippolyta revealed Athena waited for them on the edges of the Aegean seas. They had made the mistake of isolating themselves from mankind and this was a price they paid for their self-betrayal. But Antiope would hear none of it. And so two tribes of Amazons were born that day. Those who followed Hippolyta and Athena to the shores of Themyscira, and those who followed Antiope after Heracles' men and vengeance. The goddess decreed the Amazons penance would be to guard a great evil beneath the shores of the island. As long as they did their duty and remained on the island, they would be immortal. As a reminder of their errors and they were commanded to forever bear the symbols of their captivity around their wrists, so that they may never forget what happened and what could only too easily happen again without all due diligence. And so it was that for 3,000 years the Amazons of Themyscira were left to their own devices. Building a nation and carving out a truly remarkable civilization under the guidance of their Queen, Hippolyta. But then the entire world beyond Themyscira seemed to go mad, and World War II began. A woman by the name of Diana Trevor crashed on Themyscira, and through her amazing courage and bravery saves Themyscira by defeating a host of monsters from Doom's Doorway. The Amazons honored her by fashioning a ceremonial coat-of-arms from her symbols. It was only a short time later that a mother's prayers are answered. Every day, for one thousand years, Hippolyta had prayed to the goddess to grant her a child. So much was her desire and earnest were her prayers, that the goddess did indeed answer. Hippolyta fashioned a baby out of clay along the shores of Themyscira. And it was then that the final soul, the unborn infant from the Well of Souls, was infused with the clay lovingly formed by a Queen and a cycle was completed. The child was destined to be remarkable, gifted upon her creation by the gods of Olympus who had answered the prayers of a grieving woman still feeling the pain of the loss of her sister. The Queen named her baby daughter Diana, after the hero who had saved the lives of so many Amazons and was honored by them. Diana caused no end of joyful headaches for the Queen and her sister Amazons. She was the first child born and raised exclusively on Themyscira and the first one any of them had even laid eyes upon, let alone raised, in over 3,000 years. Quite a few ancient texts and scrolls were consulted on a daily basis as Diana could be willful, demanding, and as the only child on Themyscira, lonely. But it was hard not to love the Queen's young daughter and Diana had a thousand mothers, sisters, mentors, and teachers. Hippolyta took steps to make sure Diana's childhood was as normal as possible. To this end, the young princess was taught self-control of her gods granted abilities by her mother and General Phillipus. In the end, Hippolyta had a mystical barrier placed around the island proper. The barrier would negate Diana's access to her abilities while in the island interior. When Diana was twelve years old, she was tired of being the only child to be had on an island of immortal women. More than one person noticed how terribly isolated and lonely the girl was at intervals, but what could any of them truly do about it? The mystic Magala would be the one to come up with a solution. Using an ancient spell, she created a doppleganger of the princess. A mystical twin that was literally Diana's reflection brought to life. Diana could not have been more pleased. Though she abused it a little. Letting her twin attend the more boring of her classes while she went off the play, and they would enjoy secret playtimes with no one else the wiser. But then the day came when the doppleganger just...disappeared. For many years, Magala and Diana simply believed the spell had run its course. However, they were wrong. But that is the story of another Amazon princess. It would be years later that an Oracle foretold that Ares would try and destroy the world in his glee for war. The Amazons had to pick from among themselves a champion and once again re-enter the world of man. Patriarch's World. They had remained isolated long enough. A contest was organized and all the Amazons were allowed to compete, except for one. Diana was forbidden by her mother to even try, so great was Hippolyta's fear of losing her daughter. This would be the first time Diana defied her Mother in such a blatant and major way. Using the Mask of Proteus and competing masked so that existing friendships would not spoil the competition, Diana entered the Contest. Without even the benefit of her gifts, she was able to best every woman present to become the unquestioned Champion of Themyscira. And when the deceit was revealed during the awards ceremony, Hippolyta was forced to still acknowledge her daughter as the uncontested champion and bestow upon her the sacred coat-of-arms. It was on that day that Diana vowed that she would always fight in Diana Trevor's badges of honor, and so it was that the crown princess of Themyscira ventured to Patriarch's World. To begin her quest to thwart Ares, Diana was gifted with the lasso of truth. She embarked on her mission, finding Harmonia who first gave her the talisman she wore, her amulet. And Diana discovered that Harmonia was the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite. It was also during this time Diana met Steve Trevor Jr. and eventually confronted the god of war. She was able to defeat him, plowing through his madness and even he had to accept her power and wisdom regarding his actions. It was then that Diana officially took her place in Patriarch's World. She became an overnight celebrity and was known far and wide as 'Wonder Woman'. Myndi Mayer would act as Diana's publicist and make her a household name. Her face was seen plastered in newspapers, television, and everywhere Myndi could get her seen. She was a very close friend of the princess and with the woman's death, Diana lost a close friend and business associate. Though she remains close to Myndi's brother and speaks to him periodically. Diana also made fast friends with Helena Sandsmark, staying with the woman and her daughter Cassie when she first arrived in Patriarch's World. Diana would meet quite a few others during this time period, including the man who would become her best friend, Kal-el. There was an almost tangible and instant connection between herself and the Man of Steel. On their second encounter they would share in a kiss, Superman even admitting that he had thought of the princess since their first meeting, but there was nothing that could come of the encounter. Only friendship could be pursued by either one of them. It is also during this period that Diana first encountered the witch who would be her nemesis for a long time to come: Circe. Throughout her first years in the Patriarch’s world, Diana would meet many who would oppose her, both from the gods and from the mortal world. She would also find out about her mother becoming Wonder Woman during World War II, where Myndi Mayer got the name. Diana spent several years traveling the world preaching her message of peace. She would encounter various different religions and various different gods. Each of these things brought her closer to understanding the people the she could never truly be a part of them. When she return to America to stay, she once again resided in Boston with Helena Sandsmark. The Princess of the Amazons would soon return to Themyscira where she would go down into Death’s Doorway and meet Diana Trevor. The young woman was one of the many women who landed on the island, although Trevor never had the chance to become an Amazon. When Diana Trevor landed on the island, demons from Death’s Doorway were invading Themyscira. Diana jumped into the battle. She died to save the Amazons, and Princess Diana was named after her. With the blessing of Diana and her mother, Princess Diana would return to the Patriarch’s world to continue to preach Peace to world who would not listen to her. When Wonder Boy made his first appearance, Diana kept a close eye on him. He continued to fight, and she continued to watch him. The two of them would eventually meet, and Diana would begin to train him as her apprentice. The two of them would have an extremely odd relationship. Leonard Troy would never seem to listen, although the things that he learned from her were apparent in his fighting. Although they had this adversarial relationship, when one needed the other they came. They were close, and almost friends. It was when Diana, Helena, Cassie, Leo, and Leo’s mother Donna, would meet for dinner that all would realize how close of a Wonder Woman Family was forming. Diana even promised Leo to take him to Themyscira in a few months to begin true Amazon teaching, something Leo did not know men could do. |
