NATURE: |
| Survivor |
PERSONALITY: |
| Greedy
Evan McCulloch's first love is the almighty dollar. He is a mercenary at heart, as well as in occupation. When it comes to motivations, nothing speaks to Mirror Master more than currency. He'd do just about anything for a quick buck, and probably already has.
Cowardly
Mirror Master tends to look for the easy way out in any conflict. He's content to get in a scuffle if the odds are on his side, but he'd prefer to strike from a distance, or use misdirection or guile to win any fight. When the odds start looking a little long though, Evan McCulloch begins looking for his exit. This generally means that he abandons friends as well as enemies at the first sign of trouble.
Hedonist
Evan enjoys having a good time. Be it drugs, drink, wine, women, song, any of his vices. He's a man who enjoys feeling good and makes no excuses for himself. This has a tendency to get him in even more trouble, and he wouldn't have it any other way. This trait is evident in the way he uses his abilities in his capers as well. Part of the reason he enjoys facing off against the Flash. There's never a dull moment in trying to get one up on the Super-Speedster.
Regretful
Evan took the dark path that few choose to tread. Sure, he was orphaned as a young child and had a difficult childhood, but at some point he made the choice to kill, steal, and lie his way to where he is now. There's a part of him that would take it all back, if he could, but he also knows there's no way that could happen. He feels as if doing what he does is the only thing he's ever known, and at least part of him wishes that weren't true.
Amoral
Mirror Master doesn't do what he does out of any real need to hurt people, he just doesn't have the same sense of right and wrong that other people do. He's out for himself, plain and simple. He knows that people get hurt when he does his thing, but that's just not enough to stop him usually. He needs to look out for number one.
Twisted honor
Evan took his first life while still a child. The victim was a bully in his orphanage who had hurt and molested other children and was looking to make Evan his next. Evan didn't think while he did the deed, but in a bizarre form of poetic justice, did the honorable thing for the other orphans. Many times Evan has done the same in his career as Mirror Master. He has at least some form of justice in that head of his, it just rarely comes out like it would have been expected. |

DISADVANTAGES: |
| Bluff
Mirror Master is an expert at lies and misdirection. This extends to his words as well. He's become a big talker, and learned to weasel his way out of situations. It's a necessity in his line of work.
Brawling
Growing up orphaned also made Evan grow up rough. He was forced to fend for himself, often with his fists. As he got older and learned the tools of the trade as a mercenary and assassin, his skills in a fight only got that much stronger. And then comes the Flash. When you're facing a foe that tends to punch first and ask questions later, you have to learn to hold your own all that much better.
Demolitions
A mercenary is often forced to eliminate a target by any means necessary and that sometimes means the odd car bomb or two. By no means an expert, Evan can be considered very skilled at the art of demolitions. He can set up small explosive devices, with remote or timed detonators, if called upon to.
Dodge
When one faces the Fastest Man Alive on a regular basis, one gets very good at learning how to dodge a hit. Strangely, Mirror Master's conflicts with The Flash has improved his skills at dodging hits. He's still able to get hit of course (and often does) but he's dodgier than the average joe.
Hide
It's not even just that hehas his own pocket dimension available to pop into whenever he likes, Evan is one sneaky character. He knows where to lurk, what shadows are best to cower under, and where is a great place to set up an ambush. The master of misdirection often needs a place he can go to in order to plot his nefarious tricks, and Mirror Master is great at finding these places.
Area knowledge - mirror d
Having spent a lot of time in the dimension that his Mirror Gun and other high tech mirror devices accesses, Evan has a really good idea of how the place operates. He can use this to his advantage when in the dimension, always managing to keep himself one step ahead of any of his foes he manages to face there. This skill also aids him in the use of his Mirror Teleportation, which is how he often gets around from one place to another.
Know-how - mirror gun
There's something to be said for using one weapon all the time. You definitely learn how to use it well. Years of using the Mirror Gun has made Evan something of an expert in his use. He might not have created the weapon, but if he's going to call himself the "Mirror Master", he better be able to use the thing that makes his reflection so damn deadly.
Marksmanship
Training himself to be a mercenary and assassin even before he became the Mirror Master, Evan is a deadly shot with a gun. He's been picking off targets since he was barely out of his teens. Comes in handy now that his main weapon of choice is a Mirror Gun.
Lockpicking
The advantage of being involved in a life of theivery is that you pick up certain skills. While he might not need to pick many locks now that he has the Mirror devices, Evan can still remember the skills he used to use to make a living. After all, it's like riding a bicycle, innit?
Running
Ok, so you're facing off against the Fastest Man Alive. What do you learn how to do really well? Run. Ok, so it's not so helpful against a man who can run at the speed of light but it's a good thing to learn how to do, right? Especially when you might be facing off against someone who can't. If there's one thing that Evan McCulloch likes to do, it's run away and live to fight another day.
Security
Breaking and entering is just one of the skills that one should learn if one intends to have a successful career as a mercenary and hired killer. Call it a prerequisite if you'd like. Evan learned from the best how to analyze, create, and defeat security systems and has very good skill at doing all of the above. It's a great thing to add to your resume.
Shadowing
Sneaky bastard that he is, Mirror Master learned long ago how to stalk someone without being noticed, either with or without the aid of his mirror devices. He's somewhat of an expert at it now. He can tail, unseen, any except maybe the most perceptive.
Sneak
A counterpart to his ability at Shadowing, Mirror Master enjoys being sneaky. It goes part and parcel with fighting someone who can literally be everywhere in the blink of an eye. How do you keep from getting caught? Just make sure he's not able to find you, that's how. Evan knows quite a bit about how to keep himself from being noticed and caught.
Streetwise
Orphaned and turned to a life of crime, Evan grew up hard on the streets. He learned quickly the rules of the game. Where to go, who to talk to, who to do business with, and who NOT too. He's quite skilled at dealing with the "darker" side of the city, and has great urban survival skills.
Surveilance
Being the "Man in the Mirror", Evan often spends a lot of time watching his foes from a distance in order to study his prey and make plans. Keeping his distance and striking when the target presents a weakness is how Evan has lived his life. It's taught him to become very good at being patient, waiting, watching, and learning what he can.
Thievery
When it comes down to it, despite his training and his high-tech gadgets, Evan McCulloch is a two-bit crook. His love of money surpasses just about everything else. In the effort to achieve what he wants, Evan has been stealing since he was young. He's a masterthief by now, and he knows very well how to get cash by taking from everyone else.
Repair
After years of being forced to experiment with technology he didn't himself create, Evan has picked up a thing or two about repairing and altering mechanical equipment. He is sometimes called upon to make changes to his Mirror Gun and Suit on the fly, and has learned how to keep his equipment running and functioning.
Science - light
Understanding how his weapons and equipment works takes a small bit of science, and Evan has done his best to learn some of the physics involved with working with light particles and refraction. |
EQUIPMENT
EQUIPMENT: |
| Mirror Master's mirror gun is capable of retracting and firing light energy waves. These can be as basic as a blinding flash of light to as potentially lethal as a high powered laser capable of burning through steel. The gun needs ambient light to function, with a more powerful light source making a more powerful light ray possible (sunlight being the most powerful, moon or starlight being much weaker sources). It can absorb and store light to a point as well, making it possible to operate in darkness for a short time (around 30 minutes) but after the stored light source is exhausted, he will have to find another light sourrce in order to operate. This affects the rest of the gun's uses as well.
Mirror dimension
The Mirror Master has access to a place called the Mirror Dimension. It's been described by Evan as "an exact copy a' the real world with a few alterations." Apparently these dimensions are formed of light energy, creating matter duplicates of the "real world" and splintering into bizarre reflections where one or two slight differences are all that seperate it from the world we know.
Mirror Master has been shown travelling in dimensions where time and movement flows backwards (including backwards speech), where Barry Allen never became the Flash, and where the entire world was upside down. Due to his extended time travelling in these dimensions (see Area Knowledge: Mirror Dimension), Evan seems to be able to keep his head in the most disorienting surroundings and is therefore rarely with his guard down upon transport to a new one.
Most frequently, Evan utilizes a Mirror Dimension which is an exact copy of our own except things are reversed (writing on street signs, for example). Most likely he would only utilize other dimensions except in times of extreme duress or by making a mistake (which he is very careful not to - he may be used to travelling in mirror dimensions, but they can cause even *him* a headache or two if he's not careful).
Mirror gun - mirror ray
One of the powers of Evan's Mirror Gun is the ability to create reflective surfaces on everyday objects. This is done presumably firing silicate at the target and then using the heat rays that the gun can emanate to quickly fuse the particles together. Common uses are to create a mirror with which to teleport, to create a locus for refracting laser light (see Techs: Mirror Gun - Light), and to encase foes. Humans and other animals that need to breathe oxygen will die from asphyxiation if not broken free of their prison (a feat of superhuman strength would do it, to name one, though it would have to be done *carefully* so as not to harm the victim).
Mirror suit - holograms
Evan McCulloch's Mirror Master suit is capable of projecting high-powered extremely sophisticated holograms. These holograms are fast-breeding and self-reflecting and capable of replicating almost instantaneously and limitlessly. The subject of the holograms can be the Mirror Master himself (as is often the case) or one of his foes (extremely disorienting to his opponent). They can be preprogrammed to perform actions independant of their subject, or they can mimic the subject exactly and are capable of limited AI (though they are usually distinguishable from the real thing to a finely trained eye). The suit requires a light source to perform this function.
Mirror suit - hypnosis
Mirror Master's uniform is capable of hypnotizing those around him through subliminal lights sewn into the fabric. When the strobe effect enters the victim's brain, he or she will see visions in reflective surfaces around them that are usually images from the darker sides of their subconscious (guilty images like a friend or loved one that was hurt, something they themselves have done that they are ashamed of). The images that are drawn forth are not under the Mirror Master's control, and vary depending on the victim's psyche and mental stability. Someone with a strong will can attempt to resist or shake off the hypnosis and may thereafter be immune to them until the next exposure to the device.
Mirror gun - illusions
Similar to the Holograms that his suit can produce but even more sophisticated, Mirror Master is capable of creating illusions by reflecting and refracting the light to produce illusions that staggar the imagination. These illusions can change the way an object or person appears, can create objects and images that don't exist out of thin air, and can make objects or people disappear from sight (by refracting light around them). By changing a setting on the mirror gun, these illusions can go from mere sight to "hard light" configuration, a temporarily "real" illusion capable of doing Evan's will (such as an army of Flashes, attacking the real thing). The hard light illusions are extremely short-lived and low-powered copies of whatever Evan's chosen subject is (usually discorporated with a punch or two). A light source is necessary for the gun to utilize this ability.
Mirror gun - teleport
Mirrors are the Mirror Master's usual source of transportation. Using the Mirror Gun, Evan can open a doorway into the Mirror Dimension (see Tech: Mirror Dimension) which can allow near instantaneous travel and communication to other reflective surfaces in our universe. Firing the gun at a mirror can allow instant egress through whatever surface happens to be nearby (Evan has to be able to fit into it, of course) and then the Mirror Master can either choose to reside within the reflection, or make his reappearance at another location.
Evan also uses this as a means of finding (by peeking through a reflection) his target (friend or foe) and communicating with them if he wishes. Sort of like a telephone without needing any change or the ability to call collect.
It is also possible to teleport other beings or objects into the mirror dimension by using the mirror gun on a surface where the target is reflected. The transportation is instantaneous (the speed of light). Mirror Master often uses this ability to make off with ill gotten goods and store them in a safe place until needed.
Mirror gun - postcog
By firing his Mirror Gun at an object, Mirror Master is capable of using the photons which may have bombarded that object to replay recent events that have occured in or around the vicinity of that object. Only more recent events (the current day) is possible, unless the object has had a continual light source bombarding it with photons, in which case he could replay older events as well, with less clear images available.
Unlocked potential
Evan McCulloch didn't invent the Mirror Master technology. As such, there are a lot of things that it can do that he might not even know about. Given time and experimentation, Evan may discover these uses or he may not. Only time will tell.
Mirror gun - mirror trap
Using a special setting on his Mirror Gun, Evan has been known to trap victims "inside" mirrors. In actuality, he is opening a portal to a Mirror Dimension he discovered where movement is impossible. The victim can still breath, look around, even speak in some cases, but otherwise is frozen in the position in which their reflection was last seen before becoming trapped. The only way to reverse this setting, in most cases, is to use the Mirror Gun on them once again to reverse the effect. |
CONTACTS
CONTACTS: |
| Injustice gang: A part of Luthor's original Injustice Gang, which included Joker, Circe, Dr. Light, OceanMaster, J'Emm, and Luthor himself, Evan made contact with some of the baddest of the bad that the DCU has to offer. While he may not be in the best favor of all of them, he does know how to contact most of them should the need arise.
Captain cold: While he hasn't worked with Snart as long as Sam Scudder (the original Mirror Master), Evan has a good working relationship with Captain Cold. He would come to Snart's aid (even with no money involved, imagine that!) if the good Captain ever needed his help. He respects (and maybe even fears) Snart enough that he tends to listen to him when it suits his needs.
Heat wave: Though Mick Rory has been reformed for most of the time that Evan has been Mirror Master, the two of them still went through (hell) literally, and Evan would be willing to help his former Rogue bussy should the other need him. Hopefully the opposite is true as well.
Lex luthor: Having been hand-picked for Luthor's initial Injustice Gang, Mirror Master has a decent rapport with the former President since well before he ever stepped into the Oval Office. Of course, the fact that Evan betrayed his former leader at the climax of their little gambit may affect how Luthor reacts toward him the in the future. Just the fact that the evil genius sought Mirror Master out says something about the level of respect he has for him. The feeling is mutual.
Trickster: The one man he knows who beat the devil and quite possibly saved his soul from hell, Evan has a begrudging respect for James Jesse, the man formerly known as the Trickster. He knows that technically he owes Jesse one, or maybe more than one, but he also can't help but think that any deal he makes with the man is going to wind up much like the deal that Neron made with Jesse. Sour. |
ENEMIES: |
| Justice League of America: Being a member of the Injustice Gang at one time definitely upped Mirror Master's "villian rating". Not only was he now just one of Flash's enemies, he was facing off against the big guns of the DC Universe. If given the chance, any member of the JLA would attempt to put an end to Mirror Master's criminal doings.
Batman: While he doesn't technically think of Batman as an ally, the man has given him work in the past. Evan knows that The Bat plays on the side of the Angels, and he's far from one, but he also knows what Batman does. Money Talks, and a skilled mercenary is hard to find.
Flash: Mirror Master and Flash. They're like oil and water. If Evan could be considered to have an "arch-enemy", it'd be the Flashster. Ever since he took up the mantle of Mirror Master from Sam Scudder, Evan and Wally have been clashing and will probably continue to clash as long as they both exist. It's a good thing that Evan's modus operandi perfectly corresponds with someone who has superspeed, or McCulloch would have been caught ages ago. |
HISTORY
Evan McCulloch a.k.a. Mirror Master II (Cross-reference file #121 Scudder, Sam a.k.a. Mirror Master I)
Apparently, from what we are able to ascertain through public records (interviews with McCulloch himself during bouts of incarceration, however brief, have provided little hard data), Evan McCulloch was left on the steps of an Orphanage, somewhere in Scotland, before he could crawl. He was taken in there by the proprietress of the Orphanage and given her last name since the note left in his basket only gave him his first. His parents reasons for leaving him are still unknown, but it was suspected that the couple may have been too young and not ready for the pressures of parenthood.
Life in the orphanage may have been difficult for the boy. Recent investigations have led us to believe there may have been cases of sexual abuse present in the orphanage, up until somewhere around Evan's 9th year of age, when the suspected perpetrator drown in a nearby stream. The McCulloch boy was the only witness to the death, which supposedly occurred in the dead of night. When interviewed as a child about why he and the other child were out during the night Evan could give no reply.
We took some time to interview some of the other adults who were members of the orphanage as children during that incident, and it's commonly assumed (though never proven) that Evan himself may have been to blame for the death.
KEYSTONE CITY ROGUE PROFILE #242
From there, our records on Evan begin to get a bit more spotty. We know he spent his formative years in the orphanage, leaving shortly after his 16th birthday to seek his own work. We have no real record of any legitimate business he was involved in. We do show him as having a criminal record as early as 17. Burglary, extortion, armed robbery. He was saved by his young age. Sent to boys' schools. Would stay for a few weeks and then move on as quickly as he came, always managing to escape somehow.
It was then that Evan McCulloch dropped off the face of the earth as far as records go. By his own admission, McCulloch began a life as a mercenary, taking odd jobs for pay. He was apparently good enough to make a living out of this as we still don't see any signs of legitimate employment of any kind. In fact, it looks as if somewhere along the lines he may have made some very powerful friends. There appear to be holes dug out of his computer records. Where there should be ways to trace him, we come up with ...nothing. It's very unusual, and speak of him possibly making some high profile contacts (government, perhaps?) that looked after him for a time.
Sidenote: During a psychological interview with one of our profilers, McCulloch let slip something that may be of use. He stated that he may have been responsible for the death of his own father and mother, and though it appears that his biological father was shot to death by an unknown assailant, his mother committed suicide shortly after hearing of her loss. It's unknown how McCulloch may have contributed to these occurrances, or perhaps he was (as he likes to do) misdirecting the profiler into disrailing the investigation. Only time, and further sessions, will tell.
Evan McCulloch a.k.a. Mirror Master II (Cross-reference file #121 Scudder, Sam a.k.a. Mirror Master I) (file continues)
We also do not currently know how Evan McCulloch obtained the suit and weaponry of the original Mirror Master (Sam Scudder). The equipment was supposedly confiscated by the U.S. Government after the death of Scudder during what's now dubbed as The Crisis (Cross Reference: Flash II - Allen, Barry - Death of). The fact that the gun and suit of the Mirror Master were reported stolen and yet no break-in report was ever released seems to point toward a conspiracy of sorts and suggests further links between McCulloch and the U.S. Government, though improbable to prove with the evidence available.
We have obtained report that one of his first appearances in the guise of Mirror Master appears to have involved a former member of the Justice League International (Cross reference: JLI, Animal Man - Baker, Buddy). The attack was foiled by Animal Man and...interestingly enough...his wife. Baker's statement about the attack mentioned McCulloch's own suggestion that he may have had the government's interests at heart when he invaded the Baker's home, but again, McCulloch enjoys misdirection, so his true motivations are at this time unknown
At some point, however, McCulloch's powerful friends ceased covering for him. He began pulling what appears to be a rash of bank heists in Keystone and Central city. These were in the papers, well documented. What could have happened? Why did he suddenly appear to be working for himself? Why was he suddenly so traceable? These are questions that only McCulloch himself could probably answer, and he refuses. What he does say is so horribly obscured by his Scottish brogue that it's often hard to tell anyway.
The next big event where Evan's name appears is in the destruction of the Houma Oil fields in Houma, Louisiana. He was apparently a pawn in a plot by the being calling itself Neron (Cross Reference Rogue file #666, Neron) to unleash Hell on Earth. McCulloch's soul (according to Flash and McCulloch himself) was stolen by Neron when the Mirror Master was tricked by Abra Kadabra (Cross Reference Rogue file #123, Abra Kadabra) into sacrificing himself. Flash and the other heroes of Earth were eventually able to stop Neron, but McCulloch's fate was left in the air for some time later.
Eventually, Mirror Master and the other Rogues did reappear in Keystone. Soulless and granted near-unlimited power by Neron, they attacked the city using Avatars of their respective powers (See Index: Rogue Avatars). Flash was once again able to stop Neron and the souls were eventually returned to the Rogues, including McCulloch. At least, that's what is generally believed. In interviews, McCulloch has stated that he's not entirely sure the Neron business is finished.
Here's where it gets a bit interesting. Keep in mind, this is directly from McCulloch's mouth, so who knows how well it can be trusted. Apparently, Mirror Master did battle with the newly formed JLA (Cross reference file: JLA) which contained the likes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. According to McCulloch, he was a member of a crew calling themselves the Injustice Gang, and they consisted of the wanted criminals known as Circe, Dr. Light, Ocean Master, The Joker, and were led by former President Luthor (BEFORE he became President). It sounds insane, but based on the former President's current criminal status it may not be as far from the truth as we may have initially believed. Apparently McCulloch was instrumental in helping the JLA defeat the Injustice Gang. But again, this is McCulloch, so it's hard to believe anything that he's said.
How he walked out of that situation unscathed, it's hard to say. To hear him tell it, Batman paid him to betray his teammates (which doesn't sound unreasonable based on his psyche profile). At any rate, he ended up back in Keystone, a two bit crook and a Rogue in the company of Blacksmith (see Rogue Profile #1111, Blacksmith) and her Rogues until they were also recently defeated by the Flash. Where he is now, it's difficult to say. His recent escape from Iron Heights has the entire city on the alert. With the Flash on the case, we know it's only a matter of time before he's back at Iron Heights where he belongs.
Then of course he'll escape once more. And get himself caught once again. And then escape again. And then get caught again. The man's life is like two mirrors face to face on opposite walls, a reflection trailing off into infinity.
